Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram in Rishikesh, abandoned since 1997 and popularly known as The Beatles Cathederal Gallery, has been opened for tourists after nearly two decades. The ashram, which falls under Rajaji National Park has been made into an eco-tourism destination by Uttarakhand’s Forest Department.
‘Yoga Capital of the World’, Rishikesh, was visited by legendary English band The Beatles in 1968. The band had come Rishikesh to learn transcendental meditation from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Beatles are said to have written most of their White Album songs here.
YK Gangwar, regional tourism officer, District Tourism Development Office, Dehradun, said, “Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram is an internationally known tourist destination. Reopening of the ashram will definitely invite large tourist inflow into the region. However, Rishikesh is not just famous because The Beatles’ association with the place, but it is also popular as a yoga destination. A lot of tourists visit the ashram because The Beatles had come here. I urge the forest departement ro revive site’s yoga legacy too.”
Uttarakhand’s Forest Minister, Dinesh Aggarwal has suggested plans to include a yoga and meditation centre in the future.
